Xmas Run 2019 – Ennerdale Skyline

Friday 27th December, the Elbra Xmas Party/AGM/Run.

Our annual Christmas run. Most, if not all, of the club members look forward to it all year. This year was no different with our biggest turnout yet. The route was the Ennerdale Skyline, approx 24mile and 10,000ft of ascent, slightly shorter than previous years, we must be going soft. The Ennerdale Skyline route hits all the tops over looking the Ennerdale valley.

As we set off the weather was rather good for the time of year. We had a brief view of red sky from the rising sun while at the summit of Great Borne, that really was the last of any good views we had.

As we carried on towards Red Pike the wind picked up and with that the jackets came on. They stayed on for the rest of the day. The weather gradually got worse the longer we were out. With the wind and visibility getting worse as we headed up Great Gable and Kirk Fell.

Due to the strong wind we decided to take the sheltered route up to Pillar via Robinson’s Cairn. Going over Scoat Fell and Haycock the rain had joined the party and was driving home with the wind. We had to keep moving to stay warm.

Once we got over Caw Fell and Iron Crag we started to drop down out of the wind which was a relief. A good long run back in to the cars at Bleach Green got us all warmed back up again.

Once changed into dry gear it was time to enjoy a couple of pints at the Fox and Hounds Inn.

Yet another grand day out.
